During their visit to the National Library, Miaka Yuuki and Yui Hongo, two junior-high students, get transported into the world of a mysterious book that takes them to ancient China, known as "The Universe of The Four Gods." Miaka's fate takes an unexpected turn when she is chosen to be the priestess of Suzaku, and her task is to unite all of her celestial warriors to summon Suzaku and make three wishes. However, Yui is manipulated into becoming the priestess of Seiryuu by Seiryuu's enemy nation. The two former best friends are now turned enemies as they embark on their journey to summon their respective gods and obtain their wishes.
In 1923, Takao, the father of Suzuno Osugi, cautioned her against reading The Universe of the Four Gods, explaining that it was exclusively designed for men. Takao had collaborated with the deceased Einosuke Okuda, who had deciphered the tale's significance, and he was aware of the need for a final leading character, the priestess of Byakko, to be introduced into the plot.
Living in the Taisho Era, Takiko Okuda is a resolute young girl who faces numerous hardships. Her beloved, Oosugi, is married; her mother is terminally ill, and her father, Einosuke, has been absent for a year. Einosuke finally returns with a notebook filled with Chinese writings that he values more than his wife's demise, prompting Takiko to steal his translation, "The Universe of the Four Gods," with the intent of destroying it.
