Udagawa Gosuke, the protagonist, inherited his father's dojo after his father and elder brother were forced to commit hara-kiri. As a second son, it was not expected that he would inherit the dojo. This tragic event left him with a lack of self-confidence, causing him to practice fencing daily at a nearby dojo.
